Entrepreneur, Artist, Writer, Teacher, Lifelong Learner...
We often accumulate a number of "titles" as we journey through life; these are some of mine. They are crucial elements to what I will bring to our partnership table.
Teacher - I had no idea that spending over a decade as a middle school teacher would equip me with a wide variety of skills and abilities particularly suited to marketing, but I am thankful that it has. Here are some crucial abilities that I have been able to learn and build as a teacher that crosses over into the Marketing arena:
Reflection and Analytical Thinking: Successful teachers need to constantly be reflecting and analyzing - we reflect on ourselves - our actions, words, choices, thoughts - and we analyze everything. This means that we can identify what is going well, what needs to be changed, and when to re-strategize. This also means that we have the ability to problem-solve effectively and to come up with new ideas and strategies.
Ability to Differentiate: As a teacher, I've worked with hundreds of students, parents and colleagues. This has taught me that different people learn and interact in many different ways, and that if we want to get the best out of others, we need to be able to understand and work with what makes them "tick." This means that when it comes to using content for re-targeting, brand differentiation, tailored distribution and content strategy, creating and adapting messages for your audience is an intuitive process.
Community Builder: Building community operates at overlapping levels in education. From the classroom ecosystem to the inclusion of parents and furthering into neighbourhood outreach, teachers develop the innate ability to listen, understand and bring people together. In addition, good teachers use storytelling to build community, and skilled storytelling is a crucial aspect of engaging and building trust and establishing common ground with your Audience. As a Community Builder, I have also developed the ability to listen, reach out and interact - important elements in online marketing!
Expert Communication: In order to teach effectively, teachers need to be able to communicate! Clearly, engagingly, effectively and professionally. This, of course, is a key component of marketing - using this skill to find, engage with and build rapport with your Audience and Potential Audience is how companies are built, brands established and relationships made.
Expert Planner and Researcher: Research and planning are also determining factors when it comes to successful marketing - and once again, these are skills that all good teachers must have or develop. Research is essential to knowing your Audience: their struggles, questions, challenges which, in turn, informs what content will speak to them and inspire them to take your Call to Action. Planning is needed to be able to come up with content and campaigns and implement them successfully.
Growth Mentality: The most effective teachers are also lifelong learners with a growth mentality. This attitude, willingness and eagerness to learn translates positively into every aspect of life. When it comes to marketing, a growth mindset equals perseverance and determination, flexible thinking, constantly processing and implementing new knowledge continually seeking the best strategies and solutions.
